March 2010
On Saturday April 10, Glen Abbey United Church held its 10th annual dinner dance. The theme for this 2010 event was “Olympic Spirit, Keeping the Flame Alight” to build upon our great sense of pride and accomplishment at the recent Olympics and Paralympics held in Vancouver. Located near Upper Middle Road and Nottinghill Gate in Oakville, the church was decorated in an Olympic theme including an entire torch bearer package with an actual torch used in the GTA.
One of the goals of the dinner dance is to raise funds for a local charitable organization. This year, the church selected the Halton Branch of Habitat for Humanity which is planning two builds in Oakville this summer. Proceeds from the dinner dance and the live and silent auctions resulted in a contribution of $10,000 from Glen Abbey United Church to support the upcoming projects. Lynn Fergusson, Vice- chair of the Board of Directors and Anne Maslowski, Director of Development were present to accept the donation and noted that ground breaking is planned for April 21st. Lynn also indicated that Habitat relies on such financial support and this contribution will go a long way toward a successful build. Glen Abbey United Church is also supporting the two new home projects with over forty volunteers anxious to participate with construction. Readers also interested in working on the builds can contact Natalie Charette at Habitat Halton at 905-637-4446 ext. 224.
A second highlight for the crowd of over 160 people was the presence of Jennifer Botterill, a member of Canada's gold winning women's hockey team. Having won three Olympic golds, an Olympic silver and five World Championships, Jennifer is among Canada's most decorated athletes. She spoke for a few minutes about her Olympic experience and emphasized the teamwork behind the success of their hockey team. She inspired the crowd as she shared her experience in making her first Olympic team for the 1998 games and the support provided to her by family and friends. A highlight for all was the opportunity to hold Jennifer’s 2010 Vancouver gold medal and have their picture taken with her and the medal.
The evening was a great success and clearly those attending had a great time.

FareShare Foodbank Collections On Communion Sundays
In Oakville, as in many other places, the local foodbank is an essential support line for many families. At Glen Abbey, we encourage people to make monthly foodbank contributions on Communion Sundays (usually the first Sunday of the month). As we come to the Lord's Table to remember the spiritual gifts we have been given, we also try to ensure that food is available for those in need.
Roofs For the Roofless - ongoing penny collection in "little white house". Eyeglasses collection - put your used glasses in the box in the foyer by the bulletin board. Cash register tapes from UltraMart, A&P, Dominion, and SuperFresh are being collected to help support church Outreach programs.
Please call the church office at 905-825-5292.
